We are pleased to announce the foundation of the European Society for Phenomenology, an international scholarly association dedicated to promoting phenomenological research and fostering cooperation among phenomenologists and phenomenological institutions across Europe.
Founded on 9 May 2026, the Society provides a common European framework for scholarly exchange, institutional cooperation, and the development and visibility of phenomenological research. While European in its institutional focus, the Society is committed to dialogue and cooperation with the international phenomenological community.
The Society was established by 91 founding members, with the support of 66 phenomenological institutions across Europe, including societies, research centres and institutes, archives, and journals devoted to phenomenology.
In June 2026, the founding members elected the Society’s first Executive Board and Advisory Council.
Executive Board: Andrea Altobrando, Élodie Boublil, Sylvain Camilleri, Cristian Ciocan, Daniele De Santis, Sophie Loidolt, Pierre-Jean Renaudie, Jaroslava Vydrová, Dan Zahavi.
Advisory Council: Gabriella Baptist, Thomas Bedorf, Thiemo Breyer, Jagna Brudzińska, Ion Copoeru, Natalie Depraz, Annabelle Dufourcq, Thomas Fuchs, Hanne Jacobs, Karel Novotný, Søren Overgaard, Dominique Pradelle, Inga Römer, Alexander Schnell, Michela Summa, Emiliano Trizio, Charlotta Weigelt.
At its first meeting on 27 August 2026, the Executive Board elected
- Dan Zahavi as President,
- Cristian Ciocan and Jaroslava Vydrová as Vice-Presidents,
- Sylvain Camilleri as Secretary General.
The Board also agreed on a distribution of responsibilities:
- Congress & Academic Activities are coordinated by Dan Zahavi and Andrea Altobrando;

- Website & Digital Infrastructure, Communication & Outreach by Cristian Ciocan and Élodie Boublil;
- Membership by Sylvain Camilleri and Daniele De Santis.
Among its first initiatives, the Society is developing its website and membership procedures, preparing a framework for endorsing significant cross-national phenomenological events and initiatives, and planning its first major congress.
The Newsletter of Phenomenology, established in 2002 as a project of the Romanian Society for Phenomenology, will also serve as the official newsletter of the European Society for Phenomenology, while retaining its international scope and continuing to disseminate information about phenomenological events and initiatives worldwide.
The European Society for Phenomenology also has a dedicated Facebook page, which will be used for news and announcements.
Further information about the Society’s activities, membership, and website will be announced in the coming months.

I look forward to working with the other members of the Executive Board — Andrea Altobrando, Élodie Boublil, Sylvain Camilleri, Cristian Ciocan, Daniele De Santis, Sophie Loidolt, Pierre-Jean Renaudie, and Jaroslava Vydrová — to advance the Society’s aims and objectives.
We are currently designing a new website for the Society, and I will post an update once it is live and we are able to accept membership applications.
